The data is excellent, but it's locked inside dense, year-by-year tables that are hard to compare across seasons, let alone turn into a real answer. I wanted something that could parse multiple years of trial data and surface not just which grass species work, but which cultivars perform best. I know a lot of people go through the same frustration digging through NTEP by hand, so what started as a personal tool became PoaIndex. ## Principles - Independent and evidence-backed: species suitability and cultivar rankings are shown separately, grounded in curated NTEP history. - Transparent and complete: species returned for a location are listed even when cultivar evidence is thin. - No invented retail inventory: PoaIndex does not claim current seed-store availability. ## Independence PoaIndex is independent and not affiliated with NTEP or AOSCA. Consider geocoded NTEP sites within a search radius (default 800 km), sorted by distance. 2. **Local anchor:** nearest site with ≥1 distinct year and ≥10 canonical cultivars (no recency requirement). 3. **Regional support:** up to 2 additional sites with ≥3 years and ≥10 cultivars, preferring recent tiers. 4. Union of selected sites is at most **3** (local first). 5. Sparse fallback uses nearest non-local candidates only when longitudinal regional support is absent. The nearest site is **not** the only evidence. Regional multi-year support remains part of the plan when available. ## Scoring 1. Within quality-cohort × site annual percentiles only. 2. Weight each observation by `0.9^age`. 3. `rawScore` = weighted mean percentile. 4. `confidence` combines year, site, and recency factors (site factor saturates at 2 sites with data). 5. `score = 50 + confidence × (rawScore − 50)`. PoaIndex’s historical quality corpus focuses on annual site-level **Turfgrass Quality** observations: `species + trial + data_year + site + entry + turfgrass_quality` Commercial asterisk (`*`) on NTEP reports means the entry was marked commercial in that report year. Absence of `*` is not “never commercialized.” Historical commercial marks are **not** live retail inventory. ## U.S. Census ZCTA Five-digit postal codes resolve to Census ZCTA representative points (Gazetteer). Location is approximate postal geography, not an exact USPS delivery address. ## AOSCA Grass Index AOSCA confirms official variety identity where a match is confirmed. Confirmed matches may affect **consumer display names** only. They never change scientific scores or ranks. ## National turf-zone baseline PoaIndex assigns each supported ZCTA to a broad turf climate zone (`cool-season`, `transition`, `warm-season`, or `unclassified`) via methodology **turf-zone-v2**. If you have ever compared two bags of grass seed and wondered whether one cultivar is actually better than another, the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program is one of the best places to look for evidence. The **National Turfgrass Evaluation Program**, usually shortened to **NTEP**, coordinates standardized turfgrass trials across the United States and Canada. Cultivars and experimental breeding lines are planted at multiple research locations and evaluated over multiple years. NTEP says its results are used by plant breeders, researchers, extension specialists, government agencies, turf professionals, growers, and consumers. ## What does NTEP test? NTEP trials can collect much more than a single measure of whether a grass "looks good." Depending on the trial, researchers may evaluate characteristics including turfgrass quality, color, density, establishment, disease resistance, drought response, traffic tolerance, winter injury, and other stresses. For PoaIndex, the central measurement is **Turfgrass Quality** because it is one of the most consistently collected measurements across NTEP trials and locations. ## Why location matters A cultivar that performs exceptionally well in one part of the country may not perform the same way somewhere else. That is not a flaw in NTEP data—it is one of the reasons the testing network exists. NTEP describes its trials as a way to understand both the broad adaptation of a cultivar and whether it is suited to a local area or management level. For example, a current Kentucky bluegrass report may contain results from multiple Location Performance Index groups, regional summaries, maintenance schedules, traffic studies, shade trials, and individual research locations. That means there is rarely one universally correct answer to: > What is the best Kentucky bluegrass? A better question is: > Which Kentucky bluegrass cultivars have performed well in relevant NTEP trials > for conditions reasonably similar to mine? That is the question PoaIndex is designed to help answer. ## Why doesn't PoaIndex just use the national average? National summaries are useful, but averaging everything together can hide meaningful local differences. PoaIndex therefore works from historical site-level NTEP Turfgrass Quality evidence. A location entered by the user is used to identify geographically relevant testing evidence, while longer-running regional sites provide additional context. This keeps the geographic information in the underlying NTEP data instead of reducing every cultivar to a single national number. ## NTEP does not sell grass seed NTEP is a testing program, not a seed retailer. Its trials may include named commercial cultivars as well as experimental designations that breeders are still evaluating. Some experimental entries later receive consumer-facing variety names; others may never be widely sold. That distinction is important when reading NTEP reports. PoaIndex separately uses reviewed identity information, including AOSCA records where a match can be confirmed, to make experimental NTEP names more useful to consumers. The AOSCA Grass Variety Review Board index includes both official variety names and experimental designations for many reviewed grasses. ## How PoaIndex uses NTEP PoaIndex does not replace NTEP. It is an interpretation layer built around NTEP evidence. A report may contain dozens or hundreds of cultivars, multiple locations, multiple years, averages, statistical values, and specialized trials. The key is to avoid treating every number as if it has the same meaning. ## Start with the species and trial First confirm that you are comparing cultivars within the same turfgrass species and trial. A Kentucky bluegrass score should not be directly compared with a tall fescue score simply because both happen to use a 1–9 scale. NTEP specifically notes that Turfgrass Quality values are relative within a species and its management context. A quality score of 6 in tall fescue does not necessarily represent the same turf performance as a 6 in Kentucky bluegrass. ## Look at the location Location is one of the most important columns in an NTEP report. Climate, soils, rainfall, disease pressure, winter conditions, summer heat and management vary across test sites. A cultivar may therefore look excellent at one site and ordinary at another. NTEP cautions users that results can vary from year to year and location to location. This is why PoaIndex retains site-level evidence rather than simply selecting the cultivar with the highest nationwide average. ## Look at the year A single excellent season is useful evidence, but it is not the same as repeated performance. Ask: **How many years was this cultivar evaluated?** **How recent are those years?** **Does it perform well repeatedly, or only once?** PoaIndex weights recent evidence more heavily while still retaining older historical results. It also reports confidence separately from performance so that a cultivar supported by several years and sites can be distinguished from an impressive result based on sparse evidence. ## Understand the 1–9 scale Many NTEP characteristics use a 1–9 scale. For Turfgrass Quality, **9 represents outstanding or ideal turf and 1 represents very poor or dead turf**. NTEP says a rating of **6 or above is generally considered acceptable**. That does not mean you should automatically buy the cultivar with the largest raw number. Those scores still need context: location, year, trial, management regime and statistical separation. ## Pay attention to LSD NTEP tables frequently include an **LSD**, or Least Significant Difference, value. The LSD helps determine whether the observed difference between two cultivar means is large enough to be statistically distinguishable in that particular table. NTEP's guidance is straightforward: compare the difference between two cultivar means with the LSD. If the difference exceeds the LSD, the difference is considered statistically significant under that analysis. For example: - Cultivar A = 7.0 - Cultivar B = 6.8 - LSD = 0.7 The observed difference is 0.2, which is smaller than the LSD. You should not interpret that small numeric difference as proof that Cultivar A is meaningfully superior in that table. ## Be careful with rankings A ranked list is convenient, but rank can exaggerate tiny differences. Imagine ten cultivars tightly grouped between 6.4 and 6.7. Calling one "#1" and another "#10" makes the difference sound dramatic even when the underlying measurements may be effectively similar. That is one reason PoaIndex keeps the supporting evidence visible rather than showing a cultivar name without context. ## Read specialized tables separately Current NTEP reports may include specialized sections for conditions such as traffic, shade, drought, low-input management or different mowing schedules. Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue reports, for example, can include specialized site or management tables in addition to their main Turfgrass Quality analyses. "Turfgrass Quality" sounds simple, but it represents several characteristics at once. NTEP describes Turfgrass Quality as a visual assessment incorporating both the appearance and functional condition of the turf. Evaluators may consider factors such as color, density, uniformity, texture, growth habit, disease symptoms and environmental stress. It is therefore best understood as an **overall turf-performance rating**, not simply a measurement of how dark green a grass looks. ## The NTEP scale Most NTEP Turfgrass Quality ratings use a scale from 1 to 9. **1** represents extremely poor turf. **9** represents outstanding or ideal turf. NTEP generally considers a score of **6 or above acceptable**, although the meaning depends on the species and use being evaluated. ## Why quality is useful Researchers can collect many specialized measurements, but not every characteristic is measured at every site in every year. Turfgrass Quality is particularly useful because it is a recurring core measurement across many NTEP trials. That makes it possible to build a historical comparison across sites and years without pretending that unrelated measurements are interchangeable. This is why PoaIndex currently bases its primary scientific cultivar rankings on annual site-level Turfgrass Quality evidence. ## Why PoaIndex doesn't compare the raw numbers directly Suppose one site has conditions where most cultivars receive scores around 7, while a difficult site has scores clustered around 5. A raw 6.5 from the easy site and a raw 6.0 from the difficult site do not necessarily imply the same relative performance. PoaIndex therefore evaluates cultivars relative to the other cultivars tested in the same comparable site/year cohort before combining evidence across years and sites. The purpose is to answer: > How well did this cultivar perform relative to the grasses it was actually > competing against in that test context? rather than: > Which raw number is largest across unrelated trials? ## Quality is not yield Turfgrasses are not usually evaluated like grain crops. NTEP explicitly distinguishes Turfgrass Quality from measures such as crop yield or nutritive value. It is a turf-performance assessment built around appearance and functional use. That makes sense for lawns, athletic turf, golf courses and similar uses where density, uniformity and resilience are central to performance. ## Quality can change over the year NTEP requires Turfgrass Quality evaluations throughout the growing season, and annual tables can summarize repeated observations. A cultivar may therefore encounter spring conditions, summer heat, disease pressure, drought periods and fall recovery during the same test year. Its annual quality result is more informative than a single photograph taken on one good day. ## Quality is not the only trait that matters A cultivar with strong overall Turfgrass Quality may not be your ideal grass for every specialized problem. If your lawn has heavy shade, severe drought, unusual salinity or intense traffic, specialized NTEP data may eventually provide additional useful evidence. A single grass may appear in an NTEP report under an experimental code, later receive a commercial name, and eventually be included in a seed blend sold under an entirely different product name. Understanding those layers makes turfgrass research much easier to use while shopping. ## Species The broadest category is the **species**. Examples include: - Kentucky bluegrass - Perennial ryegrass - Tall fescue - Bermudagrass Two cultivars within Kentucky bluegrass belong to the same species but can still differ meaningfully in appearance, disease resistance, stress tolerance and overall turf performance. ## Cultivar or variety In practical turfgrass use, **cultivar** refers to a cultivated plant selection with identifiable characteristics. You will also see NTEP, seed certification systems and commercial sources frequently use the word **variety**. For a homeowner choosing seed, the important point is that the cultivar/variety name identifies a more specific genetic selection than the species alone. Buying "Kentucky bluegrass" tells you the species. Buying a seed containing named Kentucky bluegrass cultivars tells you much more about what was actually planted. ## Experimental designation Breeders often test new material before it has a consumer-facing name. That is why NTEP reports contain names such as: - PVF-MVP-2020 - DLF-KB-3635 - BAR PP 79366 These are not necessarily retail product names. They may be experimental designations used to identify breeding material during testing. AOSCA's Grass Variety Review Board index demonstrates this relationship directly by listing separate fields for **Variety Name** and **Experimental Designation**. Some current records already have an official variety name; others still show only an experimental designation. For example, a designation can later become associated with a named variety through an AOSCA record. That is why PoaIndex keeps the historical NTEP identity and the confirmed consumer-facing identity as separate pieces of information. ## Blend A **blend** contains multiple cultivars of the same grass species. For example: Kentucky bluegrass cultivar A - Kentucky bluegrass cultivar B - Kentucky bluegrass cultivar C University extension guidance commonly recommends cultivar blending because genetic diversity can improve the overall adaptability of the turf. Penn State specifically notes the value of blending several Kentucky bluegrass cultivars. ## Mixture A **mixture** contains more than one turfgrass species. For example: Kentucky bluegrass - perennial ryegrass - fine fescue The University of Maryland distinguishes mixtures from blends this way: mixtures contain multiple grass species, while blends contain multiple cultivars of a species. Different species can complement one another where a lawn contains varying levels of sun, shade, traffic or moisture. ## The bag name may not be the cultivar name A retailer may sell a product under a brand or blend name that does not match any individual cultivar in NTEP. The seed-analysis label is therefore important. Look for the actual grass species and cultivar names in the contents rather than relying only on the large marketing name on the front of the package. ## How PoaIndex handles names PoaIndex starts with the identity found in historical NTEP testing. Where a reviewed AOSCA match can be confirmed, PoaIndex can connect an experimental designation to the recognized variety name. If a match cannot be established confidently, PoaIndex leaves the experimental designation visible rather than inventing a commercial identity. The right choice depends on climate, water availability, lawn use, appearance preferences and maintenance. ## Kentucky bluegrass Kentucky bluegrass is known for forming a dense sod and spreading through underground stems called rhizomes. That spreading growth habit helps it fill small damaged areas over time. University of Minnesota guidance describes Kentucky bluegrass as dark green and spreading, but also notes that it tends to require more water and fertilizer than many other cool-season turfgrasses and may perform poorly in shade. Kentucky bluegrass also has a long history of cultivar development, which means choosing the cultivar—not just the species—can matter considerably. ## Tall fescue Modern **turf-type tall fescues** are different from the coarse pasture-type fescues many homeowners may remember. Tall fescue is a bunch-type grass rather than a strongly rhizomatous sod-former. Its deeper rooting is one reason extension sources often highlight tall fescue for heat and drought tolerance. University of Minnesota describes turf-type tall fescue as deep rooted, drought tolerant, traffic tolerant and capable of use in some shade. ## Which handles drought better? In general, turf-type tall fescue is the stronger option where maintaining green turf through dry summer periods is a priority. Kentucky bluegrass often responds to drought by entering dormancy and turning brown, then recovering when moisture returns. That does not make Kentucky bluegrass a bad grass. Dormancy itself is a survival strategy. The question is whether you are comfortable with seasonal browning or intend to irrigate. ## Which looks better? This is subjective. Kentucky bluegrass is often valued for its dense, fine-textured, traditional cool-season lawn appearance. Modern turf-type tall fescues have become much finer and more lawn-like than older pasture types, though they can still be somewhat coarser than Kentucky bluegrass. Cultivar choice matters within both species. This is one reason PoaIndex does not stop at "choose Kentucky bluegrass" or "choose tall fescue." It continues into cultivar-level NTEP evidence. ## What about shade? Neither grass should be treated as the universal solution for deep shade. Fine fescues generally have stronger shade adaptation among cool-season lawn grasses. Tall fescue can be useful in moderate shade, while selected Kentucky bluegrasses are more appropriate for lighter shade conditions. ## What about traffic? Both can be used in active lawns. Kentucky bluegrass has the advantage of spreading and repairing through rhizomes. Tall fescue is widely valued for wear and traffic tolerance, but individual damaged bunches do not spread in the same way Kentucky bluegrass does. ## Can you mix them? Yes. Some lawn recommendations use mixtures dominated by tall fescue with a smaller percentage of Kentucky bluegrass. University of Maryland, for example, describes tall-fescue/Kentucky-bluegrass mixtures for lawn use. Whether a mixture is appropriate depends on your region and intended lawn characteristics. ## The better way to decide Instead of asking only: > Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue? consider: > Which species fits my region and lawn conditions, and which cultivars within > that species have performed well in relevant NTEP testing? It uses two kinds of evidence: **local evidence** and **regional supporting evidence**. That distinction is important. ## Why not just use the nearest site? The closest NTEP test location is geographically relevant, but it may have only a small amount of usable historical data for a particular grass species. Another site slightly farther away may contain many years of trials across a much larger set of cultivars. Using only the closest site can therefore make a recommendation depend too heavily on one small experiment. Ignoring the closest site entirely has the opposite problem: strong local information can disappear simply because a farther site has more data. PoaIndex rec-v3.1 is designed to balance those two concerns. ## The local anchor PoaIndex first looks for the closest NTEP site with enough valid Turfgrass Quality evidence to make a useful comparison. That becomes the **local anchor**. The role of the local anchor is geographical relevance. For a ZIP near a nearby university turf testing program, this allows genuinely local NTEP evidence to contribute even when that location does not have the longest historical record. ## Regional supporting sites PoaIndex can then add up to two stronger **regional supporting sites**. These sites must meet higher longitudinal evidence requirements, including multiple years of testing and enough cultivars to form a meaningful comparison. More recent evidence is preferred. Their purpose is not to override the local site automatically. They provide a broader historical context around it. ## Example: southern New Hampshire For a location such as ZIP `03062`, Amherst, Massachusetts is geographically much closer than NTEP sites in Connecticut or New Jersey. Under the current methodology, Amherst can serve as the local anchor while CT1 and NJ1 provide longer-running supporting evidence. Conceptually: 03062 ↓ MA1 — local NTEP evidence + CT1 — regional multi-year support + NJ1 — regional multi-year support That is more informative than pretending either geography or dataset size alone should determine the result. ## Distance does not increase a cultivar's score PoaIndex does **not** give a cultivar extra performance points just because an observation came from a geographically closer site. The site's actual NTEP performance evidence enters the recommendation. Distance determines which evidence is relevant enough to consider; it is not a synthetic turf-performance score. ## Why multi-year evidence matters NTEP itself cautions that turfgrass results can vary from year to year and location to location. A cultivar that looks exceptional in a single year may be experiencing unusually favorable conditions. Repeated performance across several years gives a more stable picture. That is why PoaIndex reports performance and confidence separately. A cultivar can have: **high performance with limited evidence**, or **high performance with strong multi-year evidence**. Those are not the same claim. ## Why PoaIndex shows the sites A recommendation should be inspectable. PoaIndex therefore exposes the NTEP evidence locations used to produce the result instead of hiding them behind a generic "best grass" label. The goal is not merely to tell you what ranked first. If you look through historical NTEP tables, you may notice an asterisk next to certain cultivar names. That mark is useful—but it is easy to interpret too broadly. ## It is historical evidence When PoaIndex records an NTEP commercial marker, it means the source NTEP report marked that entry as commercially available **in the context of that report**. It is evidence about that point in time. It is not a live inventory feed. A cultivar marked commercial in a 2017 report may no longer be widely sold. A cultivar without a commercial mark in an early report may have been commercialized later. ## Experimental lines can become named varieties Turfgrass development often begins with experimental designations. An entry may appear in NTEP under a breeder code before a consumer-facing variety name has been finalized. AOSCA's Grass Variety Review Board index illustrates this process by publishing both experimental designations and variety names, including records where a name was added or changed through later amendments. This is why PoaIndex does not interpret: > no commercial asterisk as: > this cultivar never reached the market. Those are different claims. ## AOSCA identity is also not retail inventory A confirmed AOSCA identity is extremely useful because it can connect an NTEP experimental designation with an official variety name. But that still does not mean you can buy the cultivar today. AOSCA's Grass Variety Review Board is concerned with variety review and eligibility for certification; the index is not a retailer-stock database. So PoaIndex keeps three concepts separate: 1. Scientific performance 2. NTEP commercial history 3. Confirmed cultivar identity None of those alone equals: **currently available from a retailer** ## Why show commercial history at all? Because it is still useful evidence. Suppose two high-performing NTEP entries are: Experimental Line ABC-123 and Named Cultivar XYZ and XYZ has repeated NTEP commercial markings plus a confirmed variety identity. That gives a homeowner more evidence that XYZ became a real-world cultivar worth searching for. It does **not** justify changing XYZ's scientific score. PoaIndex therefore keeps commercial/identity information outside the performance ranking. ## What should you search for when buying? Use the consumer-facing variety name first when PoaIndex has a confirmed one. If the seed retailer lists its component cultivars, compare those names with the PoaIndex result. Two properties in the same ZIP can have different amounts of sunlight, irrigation, soil drainage, traffic and maintenance. The right process is therefore: **location → grass species → site conditions → cultivar evidence** rather than simply: **ZIP → one magic grass seed.** ## Step 1: Start with the climate region Different turfgrass species are adapted to different broad climates. Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue and fine fescues dominate many northern lawns. Warm-season species such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and St. Augustinegrass are more appropriate across much of the warmer South. The transition between those regions is less clean, and both cool- and warm-season choices can become conditional. PoaIndex uses the entered ZIP/ZCTA as a national baseline for determining which turfgrass species are reasonable candidates before cultivar ranking begins. ## Step 2: Consider your actual property Climate is only the first filter. Ask: **Is the lawn mostly sunny or shaded?** **Will it be irrigated?** **Does it get heavy foot traffic?** **Are you optimizing for low maintenance?** Different grass species behave differently under those conditions. For example, extension guidance describes tall fescue as relatively drought and traffic tolerant, while Kentucky bluegrass is a spreading grass that often requires more water and fertility. Fine fescues are frequently favored for lower-input or shaded conditions. ## Step 3: Choose the species before the cultivar This is a critical distinction. A fantastic Kentucky bluegrass cultivar does not help if Kentucky bluegrass itself is poorly suited to your climate or property. PoaIndex therefore determines the turfgrass candidates for the location first. Only then does it rank cultivars within each species. ## Step 4: Use geographically relevant NTEP evidence Once the species has been established, PoaIndex searches historical NTEP evidence for relevant testing sites. The recommendation can combine: **the closest usable NTEP site** with **stronger multi-year regional evidence.** That reflects NTEP's own emphasis on both broad adaptation and local performance. ## Step 5: Prefer repeated performance One great year is interesting. Several strong years are more convincing. PoaIndex therefore considers how much historical evidence supports a cultivar, how recent that evidence is and how many relevant sites contributed. The result is both a performance score and a confidence estimate. ## Step 6: Translate the research name into something you can shop for NTEP may identify a cultivar by: **a commercial name** or **an experimental designation.** Where PoaIndex has a confirmed AOSCA identity, it can show the recognized variety name alongside the historical NTEP designation. AOSCA's current Grass Index explicitly connects variety names with experimental designations where available. ## Step 7: Read the seed label A seed product may be a single cultivar, a blend of several cultivars from the same species, or a mixture of multiple species. Extension guidance recommends checking the label for the actual species and cultivar/variety composition rather than relying only on the product name. If PoaIndex recommends several strong Kentucky bluegrass cultivars, finding a quality blend containing one or more of those cultivars may be more realistic than searching for a bag containing only the #1-ranked entry. ## What ZIP-based recommendations cannot know ZIP code does not reveal: - your soil test - your exact shade pattern - your irrigation habits - your mowing practices - whether a retailer currently stocks a cultivar PoaIndex should therefore be treated as an evidence-based starting point for choosing turfgrass—not a substitute for observing your property. ## The useful question Instead of asking: > What is the best grass seed for ZIP 03062? ask: > Which grass species fit 03062, and which cultivars within those species have > the strongest relevant NTEP evidence?
